Medallion Ceremony Held For Stephen Anderson

More than 19 years after he was laid to rest, friends and family of fallen correctional officer Stephen Anderson gathered recently at the Bluffdale City Cemetery to witness a modification to his headstone.

Members of the Utah Law Enforcement Memorial Board recently placed a medallion on Anderson’s grave, noting that he was killed in the line of duty.

The event was part of an effort by the board to place makers on the final resting spots of fallen officers in Utah, noted Mike Jones, a correctional officer with the Utah Department of Corrections who is an associate board member.

Using a masonry bit, Paul Child, retired chief of the Centerville Police Department, drilled into the concrete portion of Anderson’s marker for the anchors of the medallion. Watching over the process was Anderson’s son, Shawn, who recently retired from the UDC.

“It’s just awesome that corrections and the state has not forgotten him and that they won’t forget him,” said Shawn Anderson.

UDC Deputy Commissioner Mike Schoenfeld also spoke, expressing appreciation for the Anderson family.

On June 25, 2007, Anderson, a 22-year veteran of the department, was slain by an inmate he was escorting to the University of Utah Medical Center. He attacked Anderson after being unshackled for an MRI test.

He was survived by his wife, Millie, son Shawn and four daughters. The main administration building at the Utah State Correctional Facility is named in his honor.
