Brunson Pays Tribute to Fallen Service Members During Gold Star Mothers Ceremony

ARLINGTON, Va.– To mark National Gold Star Mother’s Day, Gen. Xavier T. Brunson, commander of the United Nations Command, Combined Forces Command and U.S. Forces Korea, took part in a wreath-laying ceremony and served as the distinguished speaker at Arlington National Cemetery Sept. 27, joining American Gold Star Mothers Inc..

The ceremony also featured keynote remarks from, Air Force Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, a guest address from U.S. Army Lt. Col. Jae Kim, facility investments assistant, and welcoming remarks from Joyce Paulsen, American Gold Star Mothers National President.

Brunson and Paulsen share a personal connection that predates the ceremony: years earlier, Brunson presented a folded flag to her family in recognition of their loss.

"Today at Arlington National Cemetery, I stood with American Gold Star Mothers, including 'Mama Joyce,' to honor those who gave everything," Brunson said. "Handing a folded flag to her family years ago taught me the true weight of their sacrifice. Their loved ones live on in our formations. We serve in their shadow, and we owe them a nation that never stops remembering."

Brunson closed his remarks by addressing the Gold Star Mothers in attendance directly, thanking them for the strength they lend to the military community.

"We fight, train and lead more carefully to be worthy of the empty chair at your tables," he said. "You will never walk this path alone."

The observance, held on the last Sunday in September as designated by Congress in 1936, brought together military leaders, service members and families to honor mothers whose sons and daughters died in military service.
