Unveiling Held for New Memorial for Fallen Protective Services Personnel
CANADA, September 26 - Released on September 26, 2026
Saskatchewan's fallen protective services personnel were honoured today with the unveiling of the Saskatchewan Protective Services Memorial, a permanent tribute recognizing the courage, service and sacrifice of those who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Located on Memorial Way southwest of the Legislature Building, the memorial stands as a lasting symbol of gratitude and remembrance for those who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the people and communities of Saskatchewan.
The memorial provides a place for families, friends, colleagues, organizations and the public to gather, reflect and honour the lives of those who served with dedication and distinction. It recognizes the profound impact these individuals made through their commitment to public safety and service.
"The Saskatchewan Protective Services Memorial honours the women and men who made the ultimate sacrifice to others, reflecting on their courage, dedication, and unwavering commitment to protecting the people of Saskatchewan," Community Safety Minister Michael Weger said. "The memorial now stands as a permanent reminder that their service will never be forgotten."
"Protecting the people and property of Saskatchewan often comes at a tremendous personal cost, and those sacrifices deserve to be remembered with the utmost respect and gratitude," Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) President and Fire Commissioner Marlo Pritchard said. "This memorial is ultimately about people. It honours the lives that were lived, the families who loved them, the colleagues who served beside them and the communities that were made safer because of their dedication and sacrifice."
The memorial honours firefighters, police officers, paramedics, correctional workers, emergency communications personnel, conservation officers and other protective services professionals who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The memorial was developed by the SPSA at a cost of approximately $900,000, which includes a $100,000 contribution from WorkSafe Saskatchewan, a partnership between the Workers' Compensation Board (WCB) and the Ministry of Labour Relations and Workplace Safety (LRWS).
"The Saskatchewan Protective Services Memorial is a significant and permanent tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving Saskatchewan," Saskatchewan Workers' Compensation Board CEO Phillip Germain said. "It also challenges us to do everything within our power to prevent others from being added to this memorial."
The memorial features an image of the Saskatchewan Protective Services Medal, a "helping hands" structure and a commemorative message. The design was selected through a collaborative process led by a working group representing first responder and public service sector organizations.
A total of 66 names are inscribed on the memorial with space to honour additional individuals in future years. Those recognized served in the fire services, police services, emergency medical services, federal and provincial corrections, victims services, mobile crisis services and Canadian Armed Forces, among other protective services professionals. Their service and sacrifice spans more than a century of Saskatchewan history.
The ceremony brought together dignitaries, protective services personnel, family members of the fallen and community representatives to reflect on the lives and legacies of those honoured, and to recognize the enduring impact of their public service on communities across Saskatchewan.
The memorial will serve as a place of reflection and remembrance for future generations, ensuring the sacrifices of Saskatchewan's fallen protective services personnel are never forgotten.
