Water Safety Reminder: Algal Bloom

Franklin County residents and visitors are encouraged to avoid contact with water that appears bright green, blue, discolored, or scummy. These conditions may indicate an algal bloom.

Although algae occur naturally, some blooms can produce toxins that are harmful to people, pets, and aquatic life. Harmful algal blooms cannot be identified by appearance alone.

AWARE: If you suspect an algal bloom:

• Keep children and pets away from the water.
• Do not touch or handle large mats of algae.
• Do not handle, cook or eat dead fish found nearby.
• Wash thoroughly if contact occurs.
• Rinse pets with clean water after possible exposure.
• Seek immediate medical or veterinary care if illness occurs.

REPORT: Suspected blooms may be reported to the N.C. Department of Environmental Quality. Learn more and access reporting information at algae.nc.gov.
