Board of Commissioners Meeting Recap – September 1, 2026
The Iredell County Board of Commissioners met for its regular meeting on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, addressing a rezoning request, public safety and foster care funding, transportation grants, and other county business. Here are the top highlights from the September 1 session:
Approval of Island Ford Road Rezoning Request
The Board unanimously approved a request to rezone approximately 1.06 acres along Island Ford Road to General Business. The property owner requested the rezoning to allow the parcel to potentially be combined with adjacent properties for future commercial development. The request is consistent with the county’s 2045 Horizon Plan, which designates the area for commercial use, and with the zoning of nearby properties.
Hydrant Flow Test Fee Removed
The Board approved a request from Fire Services to remove the $100 hydrant flow test fee from the county's fee schedule. Under the change, hydrant flow testing will continue to be required, but testing will be conducted by a third party rather than county staff.
Approved Budget Amendments
- Budget Amendment No. 10 to accept a $37,524 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) award benefiting the Iredell County Sheriff's Office and the Statesville Police Department. Of the total award, $12,731 will support the Sheriff's Office to purchase two thermal-imaging binoculars and one thermal-imaging monocular to assist with missing-person searches.
- Budget Amendment No. 11 to receive and expend an additional $11,700 in LINKS foster care funds. The one-time funding will assist eligible current and former foster youth and young adults as they transition into adulthood. The Department of Social Services (DSS) has identified approximately 20 potential recipients, who are expected to receive about $585 each directly or through their placement provider.
- Budget Amendment No. 12 to recognize donated services and supplies from Foster Love Adopt Repeat for improvements to the family visitation rooms at DSS. The rooms are used for court-ordered family visits when DSS has custody of children.
ICATS Seeks $2.38 Million in FY 2028 Transportation Grant Funding
The Board approved a resolution authorizing Iredell County Area Transportation Services to submit grant applications seeking approximately $2.38 million in federal and state transportation funding for Fiscal Year 2028. The funding would support capital needs, including replacement of the aging vehicle fleet, as well as operating, administrative, and mobility-management expenses. ICATS reported nearly 150,000 trips during the previous year as demand for public transportation continues to grow in Iredell County.
Community Updates and County Reminders
- Commissioners highlighted recent community events and encouraged residents to use caution on county roads during the busy agricultural harvest season, particularly around farm equipment traveling on rural roads.
- The Board also reminded residents that the Iredell County Fair will take place September 4-12. County staff reported that improvements at the fairgrounds are progressing, including gravel parking, curb and gutter, and storm drainage work. Paving and construction of a farmers market/multipurpose building are planned following the fair.
- County officials reminded residents to be aware of a recent rabies exposure involving baby goats associated with a mobile petting zoo. Anyone who may have had direct contact with the affected animals should contact the Iredell County Health Department for guidance and an assessment of whether rabies post-exposure treatment is needed.
- County offices will be closed Monday, September 7, in observance of Labor Day.
The next meeting and public comment period will be held Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 6 p.m. at the Iredell County Cooperative Extension office.
