Grand Reopening of the Accomac Debtors' Prison — July 4, 2026

The Town of Accomac is proud to announce the Grand Reopening of the historic Debtors' Prison on Independence Day, July 4, 2026, following its full restoration by Accomack County and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Ceremony & Tours

The celebration begins at 11:00 AM with a ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Accomack County Supervisor Robert Crockett, joined by Virginia Delegate Rob Bloxom and noted Accomack educator and historian Dennis Custis. Doors open for self-guided public tours immediately following the ceremony. The site will remain open from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

Each visitor will receive a newly revised Debtors' Prison brochure. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

About the Debtors' Prison

Built in 1778, the Accomac Debtors' Prison is one of the few remaining structures of its kind in the United States. The building served as a prison for those unable to pay their debts and stands as a rare surviving example of colonial-era civic architecture on Virginia's Eastern Shore.

Plan Your Visit

The Weichert Realty tent on the Debtors' Green will serve as the on-site welcome point. The Debtors' Prison is located adjacent to the historic Accomack County Courthouse complex in downtown Accomac.

Fall Tours — Coming September 2026

The Debtors' Prison will reopen in September 2026 for a special Fall Tour season featuring docents and a curated historical collection display. Details will be announced this summer.
