Guatemala to let more than one hundred Mexicans to stay in nation legally

(MENAFN) Guatemala’s immigration authorities announced Wednesday that 161 Mexicans escaping organized crime in southern Mexico have been granted temporary legal status in the country. The group includes 92 adults and 69 children from Frontera Comalapa, in Chiapas state near the Guatemalan border.

The refugees, comprising 39 families, are staying in rented homes or with relatives in La Mesilla, as drug cartel violence continues to escalate in the region. Chiapas has become a key area for drug, arms, and human trafficking, with major cartels like the Jalisco New Generation and Sinaloa Cartels fighting for control, resulting in widespread displacement and threats of forced recruitment and disappearances.

Last year, nearly 600 people fled Chiapas for Guatemala due to cartel-related violence, remaining there for several months. Human rights groups in Chiapas have expressed alarm over the sharp rise in organized crime and its impact on local communities.
